Room Preparation

Before you start to paint textured ceiling, remove anything that you don't want paint or particles on. It is best to start in an completely empty room. But if you can't remove a piece of furniture, make certain to cover it with plastic. Keep in mind that you may have to move that piece at some point. Bed sheets will absorb paint globs and could transfer that paint to the furniture. Remember to lay down adequate protection for the floors. Painting popcorn ceiling is very messy work and some of the popcorn pieces could fall off in the process.

Equipment Needed

Part of the equipment you will need to tackle the job is long handled rollers, or rollers with an extension attached. Taller ceilings will require some scaffolding or a ladder to work on. Follow all of the safety rules if you use this type of equipment. Injuries occur very easily. Roller handles should be long enough for you to easily reach the ceiling. You will need to make adjustments before painting popcorn ceiling. Check your roller length prior to actually dipping the roller in paint. Make certain that you can reach the ceiling without over-stretching. Although rollers are the standard choice, if you're willing to pay more using a popcorn ceiling spray may prove more efficient.

Safety

Safety is as important as the painting supplies. Safety glasses are a must have item to protect your eyes from pieces of popcorn and dripping paint. You are basically painting above your head and must constantly look up. This increases the chances of debris and paint getting into your eyes if they are unprotected. Getting debris in your eyes will stop the painting project immediately. A mask covering the mouth and nose will protect you from inhaling any of the dust that rains down. The best way to tackle such a big project is to start by being prepared. Just also be prepared to get dirty, dusty, and paint in your hair when painting popcorn ceiling.
