  • A popcorn texture requires the use of popcorn additive in the compound before you apply popcorn ceiling with a thick napped paint roller.
  • The swirl texture can easily be done using the trowel and simply twisting it into a swirl pattern.
  • A paint roller texture is determined by the pattern on your paint roller.
  • You can also use your fingers or paint brushes (like stipple brushes) to make various patterns.
  • A paint sprayer can also be used as long as you do not allow the “mud” (compound) to dry in it. This causes problems if you plan on using it again. One advantage to using a sprayer is that you can use a thinner compound mixture than when you use a paint roller or brush.
