- Paint roller
- Tarps and masking tape
- Ceiling texture
How to Texture a Ceiling and Create a Popcorn Ceiling
- Fill in any holes with a spackling compound.
- Apply a single coat of primer. Allow this layer to dry completely before continuing.
- Cover the floors and walls with tarps and masking tape to prevent any overspray from sticking to surfaces other than the ceiling. Things will often get messy when you start to apply the texture.
- You will want to cover yourself completely with a paint suit, including goggles, masks, and gloves to keep the texture from sticking to your skin or getting into your eyes during the spraying process.
- Follow the instructions to mix the texture compound until it the consistency of a thick porridge.
- Fill the hopper gun with the mixture.
- Prior to turning on the air compressor, it may be a good idea to have a piece of cardboard handy to practice handling the gun a little before aiming at the ceiling.
- Turn on the air compressor.
- Apply several thin coats, allowing to dry before adding the next as to prevent dripping. Be sure to move the hopper gun in a manner that you are not over-saturating any one particular area.
- Once dry, clean up the tarps and masking tape and sit back to enjoy your handiwork.
Procedure to Follow After Adding a Popcorn Ceiling
Once you have taken the steps necessary to apply popcorn ceiling in your home, you will likely notice that the paint tends to discolor much quicker than a painted flat wall. While it is often difficult to repaint a popcorn ceiling, you may want to clean the ceiling regularly to prevent the accumulation of dust and dirt. Using warm water, gentle soap, and a rag will help with removing the dust, but you may need to use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove the cobwebs that will likely build up over time.
