The first step when you remove popcorn ceiling textures is to gather all of your supplies. Drop clothes and tape are a must for this job as it can get very messy. Purchase goggles to protect your eyes for the same reason. You will also need a scraper, a ladder and thin plastic for the walls. Water in a spray bottle is necessary and you will want to purchase drywall primer and new ceiling paint to complete the job.

Acoustic Ceiling Removal

Preparing the Room

Remove all furniture from the room. Scraping acoustic ceiling textures creates quite a bit of mess and you don’t want that on your furnishings. Once the furniture has been removed, cover every inch of the floor with drop clothes. Overlap these to protect your floor covering. You will also need to tape the walls with plastic. Do this right at the seam where the ceiling meets the wall. The fewer gaps you leave, the less mess you will have to clean up. While doing this, remove ceiling fixtures and tape electrical wires out of the way. Cut the circuit breaker off at this time also.

Begin Removing the Acoustic Ceiling

Put your goggles on before beginning as you need to ensure your eyes are protected. Thoroughly wet the ceiling. This may be done using water placed in a spray bottle or you may wish to use a garden hose with a mister nozzle. The texture must be thoroughly drenched before you can remove it. Once it is saturated, start scraping. The texture should peel right off. At this point, you will need to place the mess in a plastic bag or bucket you can throw away. When you have completed an area of the ceiling, wipe it down with a clean, wet rag or sponge. Move on to the next section.

Finishing Up

Once all texture has been removed, prime the drywall before moving forward. This ensures you get a smooth finish with your paint. After the primer dries, apply two coats of a premium brand ceiling paint. Premium is best as you don’t want to have to paint the ceiling again anytime soon. Wait until the paint dries before removing the plastic from the walls and the drop clothes from the floor. Now you have completed the acoustic ceiling removal and your room is ready to enjoy.
